Decorate a Room With Style and Like a Pro

“Your room is a reflection of who you are – let it shine just like you.” – Unknown

When I enter a room, three things usually stand out to me – the way it looks, the way it’s styled, the way it makes me feel. Room decorations breathe life into any space, and that is important because for most people, entering a room isn’t just about staying in there – it’s also about experiencing the space. The room decor you choose communicates a lot to the people you invite in – your personal style, how you relax, and ideas you gravitate to.

Here’s the good news: decorating a room need not be complicated. Today, I am sharing with you several steps I personally incorporate in my decorating process. Whether you’re a homeowner elevating your home design, or a creative trying out different styles of interior decor, these tips on room decoration can help you bring out that vibe you’ve always wanted for your space!

Your décor style brings your vision to life. You need a concrete theme to tie all your ideas and inspirations together. Getting a rustic-looking room when you’re all about keeping it modern can be really frustrating. Before pouring your heart out to decorate a room, begin with the end style in mind. Here are the most popular décor styles to consider.

Transitional

This design style seamlessly blends the ever-evolving contemporary details, and the timeless elegance of the basics. This style features furniture lines that are both simple and sophisticated, and often involves straight lines, and rounded profiles.

Contemporary

Simplicity, subtlety, sophistication – three key elements that describe the contemporary style. Contemporary décor highlights space over things. This style prominently uses clean lines and texture, color, space, and shape to add a sleek and fresh vibe into the room.

Modern

Think clean lines, monochromatic color palettes, and uncluttered spaces. The modern style leans on simplicity in every element, including the lines. Dècor for this style is very minimalistic; natural details and the use of industrial materials like glass, metal, and steel are more emphasized.

Rustic

The rustic style is defined by rugged details and letting the natural beauty of the surroundings shine. This style revolves around creating a relaxing atmosphere through the use of stone, leaves, wood, and organic details. Instead of pushing for crisp lines, the rustic style allows the unique characteristics of each decorative piece to stand out.

Glam

The glam décor style works around creating an airy, luxurious, upscale feel to any space. The contemporary style blends high-end fabrics with glittering metals and accessories for a

sleek and elegant space. A room that embraces the glam style is filled with metallic accents, lucite and lacquer details, and small trinkets with reflective surfaces.

The Steps To Decorate a Room with Style

Spacing

Space connects and separates elements of room décor. Check the space available to you and plan around it based on what you want to achieve from a functionality and design perspective.

Needs

Your room should not just look aesthetically pleasing – it should function well, too. List down your goals for the room you are decorating.

Is it for welcoming people?

Is it a place where you can rest and recharge?

Is it a room for fun, entertainment, and games? A room for business?

Asking these questions before starting the design process can make any room look both functional and gorgeous.

Style Preference

After working around your existing space, and determining how the room would function, you can jumpstart your design efforts by deciding on the overall style for your room. When you find a style that fits your vision, choosing colors, furniture, and accent pieces will be so much easier.

How do you pick out a style preference? I usually go through these guide questions when I need to narrow down my choices.

“What style best fits my personality?”

“What style suits the overall design of my house?”

“Is my style choice appropriate to where I am located?”

“Is it sustainable?”

“Does it fit my budget?”

“Is it a style I enjoy?”

Hue Palette Scheme

What I love about décor styles is the way it makes choosing color palettes easier. Once I zero in on the style I like, I start the color work by mixing and matching hues associated with my design style of choice. However, you can always leave room for a little creativity. On this stage, you can experiment on what colors to assign to walls, to furniture, and to accent pieces.

Archer Furniture/ Layout

Whenever I deal with a blank space I need to layout, I consider the following points:

  • The functionality of the room.

  • The focal points.

  • The combination of furniture and accents.

  • Symmetry.

  • Spacing.

Accent Pieces

Have you entered a room and felt like the colors and patterns just match up together? Choosing the best accent pieces can do that to your room.

I call this stage “Where the Magic Happens” because adding accents is one of the secrets to taking your decor a notch higher.

Don’t be afraid to choose accents that show your personality. Experiment with layering colors that fit your theme. Mix the antique with the new. Add seasonal accents with your classic pieces. Whatever you choose, make sure the style you want shines through!

Where to Shop for Decor

“Where do you shop for decor?”
